What is the ‘Low Data Mode’ feature and how does it work on my phone?

A new feature on iPhone and Android allows you to reduce the amount of data your phone apps consume when they are not actively being used. This can reduce your HughesNet data usage when you use your phone when connected to HughesNet wireless (Wi-Fi).  The Low Data Mode feature is available on iOS 13.0 and newer. On Android, it is available on 9 and newer. Low Data Mode turns off routine background tasks that would ordinarily use data. When you turn on Low Data Mode, your iPhone may stop performing some common activities like automatic video playback, automatic updates, and automatic photo backup.


To enable this mode on your Apple device version iOS 13.0 operating system or higher follow the instructions below:


1. Start the Settings app.
2. Tap "Wi-Fi." Make sure you are connected to the network you wish to modify settings for, such as HughesNet Wi-Fi.


 
3. Tap the network.
4. On the Wi-Fi network's settings screen, turn on “Low Data Mode” by swiping the button to the right.

To enable this mode on your Android device version 9 or higher follow the instructions below:

1. Start the Settings app and go to Network & Internet.
2. Tap "WiFi." Make sure you are connected to the network you wish to modify settings for, such as HughesNet Wi-Fi.
3. Tap network you are connected to.


4. Tap “Advanced”.
5. Tap “Network Usage”. 

 

6. Tap “Treat as metered”.
